Lia Ices: “Little Marriage”
[from Grown Unknown / Jagjaguwar]
Towards the end of last year, Jagjaguwar introduced their newest signing, Lia Ices, by releasing a track from her forthcoming record months in advance. At the time, I had not heard anything of Lia Ices, but that one released song, “Grown Unknown” became a constant nudging on the inside of my head whenever a quiet moment appeared.
“Little Marriage” does far more than back up the extreme promise that “Grown Unknown” showed. Ices creates music that doesn’t sound like anything else from this era, nor does it sound particularly much like anything from any other period of time either. In sound, “Little Marriage” comes off as a delicate funeral dirge and one side of the story that takes place in the midst of the song might confirm that this is quite literally a wake for something or rather, someone.
