Luke Temple: “How Could I Lie?”
[from Don’t Act Like You Don’t Care / Western Vinyl]
I was first introduced to the music of Luke Temple by the owner of Mill Pond Records back in 2003. At the time, my band had been looking for a label to release our first record and he and I began a long and fruitful correspondence in which he alerted me to an artist that the label had just struck a deal with. At the time, Temple’s music didn’t seem to show an inkling of what was to come in just a few short years with his project, Here We Go Magic, but there was definite life and soul behind the songs he was working on at the time. You could tell that this was someone with a lot of shit to say.
As much as I’ve enjoyed the two records that Temple has released thus far with Here We Go Magic, the songs he compiled for Don’t Act Like You Don’t Care are revelatory. “How Could I Lie?” benefits from the loose, casual nature in which it was recorded, almost as if you can see the four musicians right in front of you as they are positioned around one mic in the center of a big room having one hell of a good time. Basically, “How Could I Lie?” is the hit song that Neil Young never wrote for Harvest.
